Ugandan Forces Sent to Juba Amid Kiir-Machar Power Struggle

Uganda has deployed special forces to South Sudan’s capital, Juba, as tensions escalate between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar, fueling fears of renewed civil war.

The crisis deepened after Kiir’s government detained two ministers and several senior military officials linked to Machar, triggering security concerns.

Uganda’s military chief, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, confirmed the deployment, stating that Ugandan forces are in Juba to protect Kiir and stabilize the capital.

“We, the UPDF, recognize only ONE President of South Sudan, H.E. Salva Kiir. Any move against him is a declaration of war against Uganda,” Muhoozi warned on X.

This is not the first time Uganda has intervened in South Sudan. In 2013, Ugandan troops supported Kiir against Machar’s forces, and they were deployed again in 2016 when fighting reignited.

With tensions threatening the fragile 2018 peace deal that ended a five-year civil war, Uganda fears a full-blown conflict could destabilize the region and trigger a refugee crisis.
