A devastating incident has unfolded in Kaliro District, where an 18-year-old student, Mudago Sogo, was fatally shot by a police officer. The events leading up to the shooting began when a local resident, Godfrey Mutebi, reported the theft of his three bulls. Police subsequently tracked down the suspect, Zigondo Bosco Pande, to a local bar.
As officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, a crowd gathered and tensions escalated. The situation spiralled out of control, with some individuals throwing stones at the police in an attempt to attack the suspect. Amidst the chaos, Sergeant Kyakwise discharged his firearm, striking and killing Mudago Sogo ¹.
The suspect was taken into custody at Kaliro Police Station, while Sogo was rushed to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. A post-mortem examination was later conducted at Bumanya Health Centre IV.
An investigation is currently underway to determine whether the use of force by the police officer was justified. Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha has appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to unfold.
