NRM Supporters Flood Kawempe North for Final Rally Ahead of By-Election

Thousands of National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters have gathered at Mbogo Playground in Kawempe North, eagerly awaiting President Museveni’s arrival for the final rally of Faridah Nambi’s campaign, ahead of the highly anticipated by-election on March 13.

Nambi, the NRM’s flag bearer, is one of ten candidates vying for the vacant parliamentary seat in the constituency. While her previous rallies have struggled to draw large crowds, today’s turnout is a notable shift, largely attributed to the expected presence of President Museveni.

The ruling party is hoping that Museveni’s influence will provide a much-needed boost to Nambi’s chances, particularly after her defeat in the 2021 Kampala Woman MP race to Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The Kawempe North parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya in January. Ssegirinya, a prominent NUP member, had won the seat in the 2021 elections, marking a significant victory for the opposition in Kampala.

To strengthen Nambi’s campaign, several high-ranking government officials are in attendance, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, various ministers, MPs, and top NRM leaders. Their presence emphasizes the party's concerted effort to reclaim the seat in a constituency historically dominated by opposition forces.

As the final day of campaigning unfolds, all eyes are on the NRM rally, and whether Museveni’s endorsement will be enough to sway voters in the highly contested race.
