Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has received a major boost after securing approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host key continental competitions. This milestone strengthens Uganda’s presence in African football and highlights the country’s commitment to world-class sports infrastructure.
Officially opened on June 1, 2024, the stadium is now cleared to host matches for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as well as preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. CAF lauded the venue’s contribution to African football, recognizing its role in enhancing competition standards.

This achievement follows a string of international endorsements. In October 2024, FIFA certified the stadium’s turf, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally presenting the certification. Earlier this year, Hamz Stadium was also nominated for a prestigious global sports award, cementing its reputation among elite sporting venues.
Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, credited the accomplishment to collaborative efforts by Uganda’s government and sports leadership. He acknowledged the support of President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo for their commitment to Uganda’s football development.

“This is a victory not just for Hamz Stadium but for Ugandan football as a whole,” Mulindwa remarked. “We are dedicated to maintaining top-tier standards, creating a platform for talent to flourish, and positioning Uganda as a key player in African football.”
CAF’s endorsement is expected to spur economic benefits beyond football, attracting global attention, boosting tourism, and nurturing young talent. With cutting-edge facilities and international recognition, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is poised to become a premier hub for African football and a symbol of Uganda’s rising influence in global sports.
