Kampala’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Doreen Nyanjura, opposition activist Ingrid Turinawe, and three other individuals have been granted bail following their arrest during a protest in February 2025.
The court set a non-cash bail of UGX 500,000 each for the five accused and scheduled their next hearing for April 23, 2025. The group was detained on February 17, 2025, during a demonstration demanding the release of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. They were charged with being a public nuisance.
The initial bail hearing on February 25, 2025, was postponed as the accused were not dressed in appropriate attire for court. Authorities had prevented them from wearing clothes with political slogans, leading to the delay.
After spending several days in custody, the court allowed their release on bail. The UGX 500,000 each is a security deposit that could be forfeited if they fail to appear at the next hearing.
The arrests raised concerns about the state of political freedoms in the country, prompting supporters to gather outside the court in solidarity with the accused.
As the case continues to unfold, the group will await trial while free on bail.
