Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Urges Stronger Military Cooperation for African Unity

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called on African militaries to break down barriers hindering collaboration, emphasizing that enhanced cooperation is crucial for regional stability and continental unity.

Addressing senior officers at the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Command and Staff College in Musanze District, Gen Kainerugaba highlighted persistent regional conflicts and underdevelopment as major obstacles to military integration.

“We must think beyond borders and focus on what unites us,” he said. “Regional cooperation, human security, and partnerships with our traditional allies are essential for our shared future.”

He underscored the importance of collective action, stating that closer collaboration among African nations not only deters conflict but also redirects resources toward economic development by reducing excessive military spending.

“Working together delivers better outcomes. Each country brings unique strengths, and when combined, they create a powerful force for peace and progress,” he noted.

Gen Kainerugaba commended the diversity of African nations represented at the college and urged student officers to champion African-led solutions to African challenges. “Our security, prosperity, and unity depend on adopting a strategic and cooperative mindset,” he added.

He also called for an end to inter-state rivalries, advocating for a shift toward mutual growth rather than competition. “Let us abandon the race to outshine each other. Our focus should be on collective progress,” he said.

Acknowledging the strong partnership between the UPDF and RDF, Gen Kainerugaba credited the visionary leadership of Presidents Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame for fostering military cooperation.

During his visit, he toured the college’s facilities and received briefings on its operations. Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Mubarakh Muganga, accompanied him throughout the engagement.
