Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, has been elected President of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) Parliamentary Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the country.
Tayebwa’s election reflects his strong leadership and diplomatic acumen. In his new role, he will advocate for the interests of African, Caribbean, and Pacific nations on the global stage.
Expressing gratitude to the delegates, Tayebwa acknowledged their confidence in him, Uganda’s Parliament, and the country as a whole. “This is a vote of confidence not just in me, but in the Parliament of Uganda, the government, and the nation,” he stated.
He extended special appreciation to Speaker Anita Among for nominating him and President Yoweri Museveni for his unwavering support. “Without their backing, this achievement would not have been possible,” he noted.
As President, Tayebwa pledged to prioritize the implementation of the Samoa Agreement, the legal framework governing OACPS-EU relations. He also committed to strengthening trade ties between ACP countries and the European Union by eliminating non-tariff barriers, while addressing key global challenges such as peace and security, social development, climate change, and immigration.
“I will work to elevate our presence on the international stage, ensuring progress in trade, security, and sustainable development,” he affirmed.
Tayebwa concluded with a call for unity, vowing to work relentlessly towards a better future for all.
