A grim scene unfolded on Monday morning in Bugo Cell, Masamba Parish, Rubaya Sub-county, Kabale District, where a man was discovered dead just hours after taking part in local council elections.
The deceased, identified as Silver Owomuhangi, a man in his 60s, was an outspoken supporter of Wilber Turyarugayo—the incumbent village chairperson—during Sunday’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) Local Council I elections.
Owomuhangi’s body was found dumped by the roadside on the path leading to his home, following what had been a night of post-election celebrations.
According to reports from local residents, tensions may have been simmering beneath the surface. Turyarugayo, who retained his seat, told reporters that during the victory celebrations at Bugo Trading Centre, Owomuhangi had been publicly accused by his own uncle, Henry Tumwijukye—the opposing candidate—of failing to support him in the election. Although the confrontation was reportedly defused at the time, tragedy struck the following morning.
Turyarugayo said the community was left in shock upon discovering Owomuhangi’s lifeless body, which bore visible signs of strangulation.
Authorities were immediately notified, and Kabale police have since arrested Tumwijukye along with his two sons, Victor and Naboth, to assist in the ongoing investigations.
Turyarugayo has called on residents to remain united and peaceful, warning against allowing political rivalries to tear apart the social fabric of the village.
Efforts to reach the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, for an official statement were unsuccessful, as his known phone contacts were unreachable by press time.
