The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results, showing an overall increase in successful candidates but a decline in those meeting university admission criteria.
Out of 140,888 candidates, 98.8% (139,256) attained at least a subsidiary pass in a principal-level subject, qualifying for the UACE certificate. However, only 65.5% (92,273) achieved the required two principal passes for university admission, a drop from 73.8% (80,816) in 2023.
For students seeking entry into tertiary institutions that accept one principal pass and two subsidiary passes, 86.2% (121,506) met the requirements. Performance breakdowns reveal that 54,338 candidates secured three principal passes, 37,985 earned two, 29,233 obtained one, while 17,750 managed only a subsidiary pass.
Despite the overall pass rate, 1,632 candidates failed the exams after receiving Fs, a sharp rise from 865 in the previous year. UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo noted that while pass percentages declined, the number of successful candidates increased due to higher exam participation.
The results were unveiled by Education Minister Janet Kataha Museveni at the State Lodge Nakasero. The findings underscore the need for strategic interventions to improve student performance, particularly in meeting university entry requirements.
