Mbale Secondary School is commemorating its 75th anniversary, reflecting on a rich history of academic achievement and its lasting impact on the community. Since its establishment in 1949, the school has produced numerous leaders, innovators, and professionals who have made significant contributions across various sectors.
The year-long celebrations officially began on Friday with a lively procession through the streets of Mbale town, showcasing the school’s pride and heritage. Students, staff, and other stakeholders participated in the event, marking the start of a series of activities that will culminate in a grand celebration in June.
A key highlight of the celebrations is the unveiling of a new school bus, funded by contributions from parents, aimed at improving student transportation and facilitating educational trips.
Headteacher Moses Buyela shared that the school has planned several community outreach initiatives as part of the anniversary celebrations, including cleaning campaigns, blood donation drives, and a mini-marathon, all designed to engage the wider community.
Another major highlight will be the groundbreaking of a Shs 4 billion Science and Technology Hub. “This new facility will feature cutting-edge ICT, science, and innovation labs, offering students modern spaces for learning and creativity, which are essential for academic success,” Buyela said.
The grand celebrations will be attended by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is expected to be the guest of honor.
Several stakeholders have praised the school’s legacy and contributions. Rt. Bishop Samwiri Wabulakha acknowledged the administration’s efforts in maintaining the school’s traditions, stressing the importance of leadership continuity for sustained progress.
Mbale Resident City Commissioner Asumin Nasike recognized the school’s strong discipline and the proactive leadership of Headteacher Buyela.
Mbale City Mayor Cassim Namugali also congratulated the school, commending the parents for their initiative in purchasing the new school bus, highlighting their commitment to the school’s growth without relying on external donations. He expressed excitement about the upcoming Science and Technology Hub, which he believes will significantly improve the region’s educational infrastructure.
