Uganda AIDS Commission Urges Government to Allocate Shs300 Billion for HIV/AIDS Treatment

The Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) has urged the government to allocate Shs300 billion to sustain the supply of essential HIV/AIDS drugs and laboratory equipment, following recent funding cuts that have strained the country’s response efforts.

Vincent Bagamba, UAC’s Director of Planning, cautioned that Uganda’s progress in reducing new infections and AIDS-related deaths is at risk due to the sudden drop in external support.

“We have come a long way in fighting HIV/AIDS, but the current funding shortfall threatens to reverse these achievements,” Bagamba stated.

The UAC stressed that securing this funding is critical to maintaining uninterrupted treatment, laboratory monitoring, and other life-saving services for the estimated 1.49 million people living with HIV in Uganda.

Beyond this request, the commission has also proposed increasing the HIV Mainstreaming allocation from 0.1% to 0.5% of the national budget. This adjustment would generate an additional Shs200 billion to enhance prevention and treatment efforts across the country.
