Education Ministry calls off meeting between First Lady, MPs

However, in a notice titled Postponement by the ministry of education, the ministry said the meeting would be held later.

'The Meeting between Ministry of Education and Sports and Members of Parliament that was scheduled for Wednesday, November 24, 2021, has been postponed,' the ministry said in a Twitter post.

The ministry indicated that a new date for the meeting would be communicated.

The meeting between the First Lady and MPs had faced objection by MPs from the

 Opposition.

On Wednesday during a plenary sitting, Kira municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda moved a motion imploring Parliament to allow such a meeting outside Parliament, saying it would set a bad precedent.

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah had earlier pleaded with the MPs to test for Covid-19 and attend the meeting, saying it is essential for the education sector.

Last week, Mrs Museveni wrote to Parliament asking MPs to test for Covid-19 ahead of the special meeting with them.

'We received a communication from the Education and Sports minister who wanted to pass on a message on how schools will be opened in January 2022,' Oulanyah told the MPs.

The Government has since indicated that all schools would reopen in January 2021.
